Co-ownership is often an attractive option for first-time buyers or for those looking to downsize their home once they retire. While cohabitating is very easy for most people, we must adapt some of our behaviors to ensure peace with our neighbors.
1- Try to control your noise

One of the main drawbacks of a condo or an apartment is noise. While homeowners can allow themselves a bit more freedom, noise in a condo can often be a source of problems. It’s perfectly normal to make noise during your daily activities, but what can become unpleasant for others is excessive noise. The rule to follow: think of others!
Use good judgment when it comes to using noisy household appliances, a hammer, or your sound system. Bonus point for everyone who warns their neighbors when they’re having a party 🎧🎶 or planning to do some renovations.
Note that most condominiums are now built to strict soundproofing standards.
2- Respect common areas
When you live in a condo or an apartment, shared spaces (corridors, entrance hall, mailroom, garbage room, garage, etc.) must be kept clear and not cluttered with your personal belongings.
- Avoid leaving your shoes, sports equipment, or other items in the corridors.
- Respect the rules for using common storage areas.
- Keep common areas clean after use.
3- Manage the presence of pets
While a large majority of people enjoy the company of animals, some residents may be hesitant about living near a unit with a pet. It’s true that some animals can be noisy and disrupt the peace of the neighborhood, especially during an adjustment period after a move.
Don’t hesitate to inform your neighbors of the situation. You can also schedule a brief meet-and-greet between your neighbors and your faithful companion. 🐶 As with any question, refer to your building’s regulations for more specific instructions.
4- Cultivate a sense of community

One of the advantages of co-ownership is the atmosphere that reigns there. By sharing a common life project, co-owners often establish enriching relationships of mutual aid and sharing. Many co-ownerships have set up private groups on social media to facilitate communication between owners. It’s the perfect place to discuss building developments, exchange tools, offer help, and more.
5- Be courteous with your neighbors
Daily courtesy is the foundation of harmonious co-ownership living. Simple gestures like greeting your neighbors, holding the door, or avoiding excessive noise after 10 p.m. contribute significantly to the collective well-being. It is also essential to communicate with kindness during disagreements rather than letting tensions escalate.
6- Respect the parking rules
We all know that parking disputes can quickly get out of hand! 🙅🏽🚗 It’s therefore essential to respect the rules. Each parking space should be used only by its resident, and traffic lanes should never be obstructed. Visitor parking spaces, as their name suggests, are reserved for guests and should not be used for permanent parking by residents.
