With July 1st just around the corner, “moving” is the sole thought for most Quebecers. If you’ve just sold or bought a property, congratulations! It’s the start of a beautiful chapter.
Here’s a checklist so you don’t forget anything:
Organizing your move
- Set up a system to easily identify what’s inside the boxes.
- Determine who can help.
- Arrange for childcare and pet sitting.
- Make a list of essential tasks for the big day.
- Make address changes:
- Revenu Québec and Canada Revenue Agency
- SAAQ
- Public health insurance
- Phone
- Internet and television
- Subscriptions
- Banking institution
- Life, car and home insurance, etc.
- Hydro-Québec
- Etc.
A few weeks before
- Start packing items you don’t use daily: winter clothes and accessories, fine china, books, decorations, etc.
- Eat through the provisions in the fridge, freezer, and pantry.

The days leading up to the move
- Pack as much as possible, keeping only the essentials.
- Take apart the furniture if the movers won’t.
- Clean the inside and outside of the appliances.
The day before July 1st
- Finish packing all your belongings.
- Unplug the washing machine and drain the hose.
- Make a “survival kit” and a cooler for the next day: water, snacks, disposable cutlery and dishes, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, medications, etc.
- Pack a suitcase with essential clothes and items for the next few days.
- Prepare a box with cleaning supplies and items needed to clean the new property.

The day of the move
- Reserve a parking spot for the truck or cars.
- Inspect the premises to ensure everything is in good order.
- Clean the rooms that need a spruce up.
- Unpack boxes gradually, room by room.
- Stay hydrated and eat throughout the day.
